“Building Large Scale Turnouts Suitable for Outdoor Use” by Stan Ames

Saturday April 27, 2024  1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Sometimes commercial turnouts just do not fit well into a track plan.   The cost for having a custom turnout built can be very expensive.  The alternative is to build them yourself.  On our SJR&P garden railway, we currently have over 30 custom stainless steel turnouts in use that I have built.  Some of my hand-built turnouts have been in service for over 20 years.

This clinic will present step by step techniques for building custom turnouts in either stainless steel or brass that are suitable for long term outdoor use.

Building And Operating The SJR&P Garden Railroad by Stan and Deb Ames

Thursday — Sep 19, 2024 — 5:30 pm

Situated in a wooded hillside, our 1.20.3 F/FN3 railway focuses on operation with multiple operators, waybills, dispatching, and train orders. Starting out in 1988 with a simple figure eight, we became addicted to garden railroading. Thirty-six years later, the railway has grown to over 5000 feet of track with over 50 bridges and 20 tunnels. The evolution, construction, and operation of the SJR&P Railway will be the topics of this clinic.
